Schönheit ist Nebensache or beauty is accessory

“Beauty is accessory” is one of the instructions at the beginning of the fourth movement of Paul Hindemith’s Sonata for solo viola Op. 25 No. 1. This could just as easily have come from Dore Hoyer, expressionist choreographer and author of the dance cycle “Afectos Humanos,” with which Pol Pi has been working for the past twelve years. Both works consist of five short, expressive solos and were written under the pressure of suffering in totalitarian regimes. Using letters from both artists, Pol Pi develops a dialog between their voices and the political situation in Brazil under Bolsonaro. Words, music and movement combine to form an intimate, quasi political trio.
